THQ Nordic has revealed the first gameplay trailer for its upcoming remake of the 2001 action role-playing game, Gothic. Greenlit back in 2020, players will return to the all-too-familiar mining colony, recreated in astonishing detail thanks to the power of Unreal Engine 5.

"Prisoners, it's time to face reality and embrace your fate. Make yourself at home in the Valley of Mines, a place full of danger, crime and greed. You will stay here for a very. Long. Time," the synopsis teases.

In the first gameplay trailer for Gothic 1 Remake, we get to see the beloved open world medieval fantasy realm come to life like never before. The environments, the lighting, the textures, and the combat all look incredibly detailed.

In the video below, THQ Nordic invites both new and returning players to dive deeper into the lore, explore the combat and magic, and immerse themselves in a living world filled with hidden new details.

In Gothic 1 Remake, you get thrown into the colony, a massive outdoor prison with no chance for escape.

Strays or loners won't make it far here, so get to know the three different camps of the valley and join one of them to survive. Dive into a living world and experience one of the most immersive atmospheres you'll ever see in a video game. Learn how your choices affect the story and even the entire fate of the colony. Welcome to the world of Gothic. Welcome to the colony.

Gothic was first released in 2001 for PC. A Nintendo Switch port, titled Gothic Classic, came in September 2023. But we've never really had a full-fledged remake like the one THQ Nordic is giving us.

Originally developed by Piranha Bytes, Gothic was praised by critics for its story, complex character interaction, and impressive graphics. THQ Nordic acquired the series from Piranha Bytes in 2020 and greenlit the remake.

Set in an open world medieval fantasy realm where humans are fighting a losing war against the Orcs, the King seeks to extract magical ore from the mines in order to forge enough weapons to fight back against the threat. So the king orders that anyone who has committed a crime be sent to the giant penal colony of Khorinis to mine the needed ore.

"The Colony," as it's referred to, is surrounded by a giant magical barrier created by powerful magicians that seal it off from the outside world, preventing anyone on the inside from escaping. However, when the colonists inside revolt, The Colony becomes divided into three rival factions, forcing the King to negotiate for his ore.

Dropped into the prison as an unnamed prisoner, players must attempt to escape. But in order to survive, they'll first have to form volatile alliances.

The original Gothic was considered a massive game for the time, offering over 50 hours of gameplay, a large variety of weapons and spells, and a living world where people work, sleep, eat, and fight to survive.

Hopefully, the remake remains true to the original vision of the first game. Gothic 1 Remake is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
