Sony Pictures Entertainment is distributing the film worldwide excluding Japan, and it describes the story:

D.S.O. agent Leon S. Kennedy is on a mission to rescue Dr. Antonio Taylor from kidnappers, when a mysterious woman thwarts his pursuit. Meanwhile, B.S.A.A. agent Chris Redfield is investigating a zombie outbreak in San Francisco, where the cause of the infection cannot be identified. The only thing the victims have in common is that they all visited Alcatraz Island recently. Following that clue, Chris and his team head to the island, where a new horror awaits them.

The movie is being directed by Eiichir Hasumi (Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, live-action Assassination Classroom), while the screenplay is being written by Makoto Fukami (Psycho-Pass).

In June 2017, the movie Resident Evil: Vendetta was released in theaters across North America. In May 2017, the movie made its Japanese theater debut. After Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008) and Resident Evil: Damnation (2012), the movie is the third CG-animated installment in the Resident Evil franchise.

Characters from several games in the series are included in the movie, which has an entirely original plot. The project was overseen by CAPCOM producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi (Resident Evil 4, Sengoku Basara). Leon S. Kennedy is portrayed by Matthew Mercer, Chris Redfield is portrayed by Kevin Dorman, and Rebecca Chambers is portrayed by Erin Cahill in the English dub.

The movie was made at Marza Animation Planet under the direction of Takanori Tsujimoto (The Next Generation -Patlabor-, Ultraman X), with a script by Makoto Fukami (Psycho-Pass, School-Live!). The music was created by Kenji Kawai (Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell). Executive producer is listed as Takashi Shimizu (Ju-on, live-action Kiki's Delivery Service).

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, a distinct Netflix CG anime series, had four episodes when it made its global debut in July 2021.

The eighth installment in the Resident Evil survival horror game series by CAPCOM is titled Resident Evil Village. For PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam and Stadia) platforms, the game debuted in May 2021.
