Rumours about a Mass Effect Trilogy Remaster had been doing the rounds for quite a while now, and most of this information actually came from retailers that screwed the pooch by accidentally listing the rumoured title on their websites to the point they unofficially confirmed it before the developers could.

Yesterday, however, video game media outlets were reporting that Mass Effect-related news would be officially shared by BioWare and Electronic Arts early this morning, and the developers have delivered big time.

That's right, BioWare and Electronic Arts have officially confirmed that Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a reality, and that the game is currently in development for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

According to the official information shared by the developers, players should expect Mass Effect Legendary Edition to launch worldwide at some point in Spring of 2021, although we will have to wait a little bit longer for an official release date to be revealed.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be including the original Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 plus all of the additional content that was released post-launch for each of the aforementioned titles; all remastered and optimised for 4K Ultra HD.

On top of this, players should also expect Mass Effect Legendary Edition to be forward compatible with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that the next-gen version of the recently announced collection will also get some enhancements that will give players an even better gaming experience.

BioWare's official statement:

"For many months now, our team at BioWare has been hard at work updating the textures, shaders, models, effects, and technical features of three enormous games. Our goal was not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form.

It's been amazing to see the adventures of Commander Shepard take on new life in super-sharp resolution, faster framerates, and beautiful visual enhancements. As game developers, we always hope that our games will transcend their original platforms. Having the opportunity to remaster the trilogy means that the fruits of a decade of our work will live on, and will be experienced better and clearer than ever before."

The good news don't even stop there, as Vice President of Studio GM of BioWare Casey Hudson reveals that a veteran team of developers is currently working on the next chapter in the Mass Effect universe, although he can't reveal much more than that at the moment, but it is still great news for fans of the series.

"Meanwhile here at BioWare, a veteran team has been hard at work envisioning the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe. We are in early stages on the project and can’t say any more just yet, but we’re looking forward to sharing our vision for where we’ll be going next," reads Hudson's statement.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is expected to release for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in Spring of 2021.
