Atari's brand new retro-looking console, the
Ataribox, has now been renamed to the
Atari VCS. The
Atari VCS is a console that, in the likes of the
NES Classic and
SNES Classic Mini is a console that resembles its original counterpart's classic design. In this case, the
Atari 2600. Unlike Nintendo's Classic editions, though, the
Atari VCS will be able to play not only Atari classics but also some modern games thanks to its custom AMD processor, confirmed on
Twitter by the president and CEO of AMD Lisa Su.
While a release date has yet to be announced, Atari has confirmed that pre-orders will be announced sometime in April. Hopefully they can deliver since this could end up becoming another fiasco in the likes of the infamous
Nintendo Classic shortage of consoles back in 2016, where consumers were left disappointed after not being to pick one up at launch...or ever.
