Gameplay Group International and PM Studios have officially revealed Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, a new 1v1 fighter set in the beloved world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The game is scheduled to release on July 2nd across multiple platforms and was formally announced during the EVO Awards.

This marks a significant collaboration involving Paramount, Skydance, Avatar Studios, and Nickelodeon Animation Studios. The project aims to deliver a fast-paced yet accessible fighting game that respects the source material while meeting the expectations of both casual fans and dedicated competitors.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game lets players step into the roles of iconic characters and master the four elements through distinct, expressive fighting styles. The game blends fluid animation inspired by the series’ hand-drawn aesthetic with responsive, momentum-based combat that emphasizes positioning and player expression.

At launch, the roster includes 12 playable fighters, with plans for additional characters through a post-launch seasonal roadmap. Each fighter can be paired with support characters that influence playstyle and unlock new strategic options mid-match. This support-based system adds layers of depth and variety to every encounter.

The game introduces a unique Flow System focused on movement, momentum, and creative expression. Combined with classic fighting game fundamentals, it aims to feel immediately approachable for newcomers while offering the technical ceiling serious players demand.

The developers have placed strong emphasis on online integrity and accessibility:

  • Proprietary rollback netcode for smooth online play
  • Full cross-play support across all platforms
  • Original canon Story Mode
  • Arcade Mode, Training Mode, Combo Trials, Ranked, Casual, and player lobbies
  • Gallery Mode featuring hundreds of never-before-seen images from the Avatar series

The game will retail for $29.99 USD, making it an attractive price point in the current fighting game market.

Victor Lugo, Founder and CCO of Gameplay Group International, highlighted the team’s philosophy:

“For us, this is about delivering a fighting game that feels right in the hands of players from day one. Avatar is a perfect fit for the genre — movement, mastery and expression are at its core. We’ve built a system focused on responsiveness, depth, and competitive play.”

Michael Yum, CEO of PM Studios, added:

“Avatar: The Last Airbender is a world that fans have been connected to for decades — it’s that kind of passion that draws us to a project like this. We’re proud to help bring this experience to players around the world.”

The Avatar universe has long been praised for its dynamic martial arts choreography and deep philosophical themes. Translating that into a competitive fighter presents both an exciting opportunity and a significant challenge. Early signs suggest the team understands the assignment, focusing on what makes the series special while building a game that stands on its own in the fighting game community.

With EVO already being one of the biggest stages in competitive gaming, announcing the release date there sends a clear message: this is a serious contender, not just a licensed novelty.

The inclusion of Nintendo Switch and the newly released Switch 2 broadens the potential audience significantly. Full cross-play should help maintain healthy player numbers across all platforms, which has been a common concern for smaller fighting game releases.

Players can pre-order the game now on Steam. Wishlists are also open for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Physical and digital editions will be available on all announced platforms at launch.

At $29.99, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game positions itself as an affordable entry into the genre while promising substantial content through its story mode, single-player options, and planned post-launch support.

This announcement comes at a time when the fighting game scene is growing and plenty of players to gain, with both established titles and new challengers drawing large audiences. A well-executed Avatar fighter could attract a fresh wave of players who grew up with the series but may not traditionally engage with fighting games.

Whether you are a longtime bender looking to finally throw down as Aang, Korra, or Zuko, or a competitive player curious about the next title with strong netcode and interesting mechanics, July 2nd could be an important date on the 2026 fighting game calendar.

The full roster and deeper gameplay footage are expected to surface in the coming months as the release date approaches. For now, fans have plenty of reasons to be excited about this new chapter in the Avatar gaming universe.
