All new details for the Mortal Kombat 1 Pro Kompetition: Season 2 were shared today alongside a hype trailer for the global esports program. The trailer mostly highlights past events, but at around the 45-second mark offers us a first look at the two upcoming guest fighters: Conan the Barbarian and the T-1000 Terminator.
Conan the Barbarian, the powerful warrior from the 1982 film, features the likeness of star Arnold Schwarzenegger. T-1000, the liquid metal-based cybernetic assassin from the 1991 blockbuster film Terminator 2: Judgment Day features the voice and likeness of actor Robert Patrick.
Unfortunately, the trailer stops short of revealing gameplay for either character. However, NetherRealm will release the official Conan the Barbarian gameplay trailer this week during Thursday's Kombat Kast. This will offer a deeper dive into this powerful warrior's moveset.
Conan the Barbarian will be released in Mortal Kombat 1 as part of the early access period for Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Expansion owners. He'll be available for everyone else starting on January 28th.
NetherRealm hasn't yet announced the release timing for the T-1000.
Conan and the T-1000 are the last two remaining characters for Kombat Pack 2. When all said and done, this pack will have added six new fighters to the game -- franchise favorites Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot, as well as guest fighters Ghostface from the Scream movies, Conan the Barbarian, and the T-1000 Terminator.
Kombat Pack 2 is only available through the Khaos Reigns expansion and can not be purchased separately. The expansion features these six playable characters as well as a new campaign "Khaos Reigns" story. It normally costs $49.99, but is currently on sale for $19.99 as of this writing.
For those who just want the characters and don't care for the new campaign story, you can sometimes purchase these DLC characters individually after their early access period.
It's unclear what will happen to Mortal Kombat 1 following the release of the final Kombat Pack 2 characters. There are reports that Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios scrapped plans for a Kombat Pack 3 following lackluster sales of the Khaos Reigns expansion.
That said, Mortal Kombat 1 as a whole has still been an incredibly successful title for Warner Bros. Games. As of August 2024, the game reportedly sold more than four million copies. In a recent earnings call, Warner Bros. Games included Mortal Kombat 1 as one of the publisher's four "strong and profitable game franchises with loyal, global fans."
Regardless of what happens with Mortal Kombat 1 and Kombat Pack 3, it's clear that Mortal Kombat will remain a core focus for the publisher in the years to come.
