Mortal Kombat is arguably one of the biggest video game series of all time and it's certainly one of the most well-known. That's for good reason as the franchise has been around for almost thirty years at this point and there have been twenty-four instalments in total.
Someone who has been behind-the-scenes since the very beginning is Ed Boon. Comic book artist John Tobias and Boon are credited as creating
Mortal Kombat as we know it. Boon is still around and most recently directed
Mortal Kombat 11 — the franchise's latest entry.
Recently, Boon attended the Brazil Game Show (via
Game Rant) and was asked about the possibility of NetherRealm Studios putting together remastered versions of some of the older and more classic instalments. According to the director, he and his team have considered remasters.
Boon goes as far as to mention a classic game by name — that being
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks which released for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2005. They have
"talked about doing remasters of some of the older games, you know Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks was one that fans have asked for a remaster, and we're thinking of it."
The odds of NetherRealm themselves doing a remaster of any the previous
Mortal Kombat games is unlikely. The task would is more likely to fall upon a developer that specialises in revamping old games. However, given that the current storyline seems to have been wrapped up by
Mortal Kombat 11, what's next for NetherRealm and the game series is uncertain — perhaps a reboot is on the cards.
