The
Mortal Kombat movie will star Joe Taslim (
The Raid) as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada (
The Last Samurai) as Scorpion, Mehcad Brooks (
Supergirl) as Jax, Tadanobu Asano (
Thor) as Raiden, Chin Han (
The Dark Knight) as Shang Tsung, Ludi Lin (

It's currently set to arrive in theatres in March of 2021. Simon McQuoid will direct the upcoming, live-action video game movie — it'll be his first directing credit — and Greg Russo is responsible for its script. Speaking of the screenwriter, Russo recently took to social media (
@WriterRusso) to reveal that the
Mortal Kombat movie has officially begun filming.
With this announcement, the writer shared an picture from the set — don't get your hopes up, though, as it's only a photo of a clapperboard.
"May the Elder Gods watch over us! #ITHASBEGUN," Russo said in a tweet. The hashtag is a reference to a line of Shang Tsung's from the 1995
Mortal Kombat film — wherein the fighter declares that the tournament has begun.
