MultiVersus is shutting down, and this time for good. Developer Player First Games announced that support and online play for the crossover platform fighter will end following the conclusion of Season 5 in May.

The fifth and final season will launch on February 4, 2025, and will run through May 30, 2025. Despite the future support coming to an end, Season 5 will see the arrival of two new playable characters: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. All of Season 5's content, including the two new characters, can be earned simply by playing the game. That's because as of today, real money transactions are no longer available, meaning you can not purchase Gleamium. If you do have any Gleamium or character tokens to access in-game content, you can use it until Season 5 ends.

Season 5 will officially come to an end on May 30th at 9:00 a.m. PST. After that, all online features will be shut down.

The good news for those who enjoy the game is you'll still be able to play it offline. A local gameplay mode will still be available, allowing you to play solo against A.I. opponents or against other friends. In order to access offline play, you'll need to download and install the latest version fo the game and log in at any point during Season 5.

"After logging in, a local save file will be automatically created connected to your PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account, allowing you to enjoy the game offline with all earned and purchased content moving forward," Player First Games explained.

MultiVersus is a free-to-play crossover fighting game that features a roster of characters drawn from Warner Bros. franchises, including Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, Game of Thrones, the DC Universe, and multiple Cartoon Network franchises. The game was often compared to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. although it never really gained the same traction.

Initially released in early access, MultiVersus ran from July 2022 to June 2023 when it was briefly shut down. It relaunched in March 2024 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, and was completely rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 to support better netcode and visuals.

News of the game's closure is sad, but not totally unexpected. In November of last year, Warner Bros. Discovery execs acknowledged that MultiVersus was underperforming financially. While there was no talk of shutting the game down at the time, the company expressed a desire to focus on "strong and profitable game franchises with loyal, global fans – Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones and DC, in particular Batman."
