Activision did a little chest-thumping today, announcing the publisher had delivered the number one and number two top-selling console games in North America this year. Based on revenues generated (not copies sold), Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2 were the No. 1 and No. 2 top-selling titles in North America this year, respectively.
For Call of Duty: WWII, which has already surpassed $1 billion in sell-through worldwide since its launch last month, this extends the franchise's run as the No. 1 top-selling console video game franchise in North America for nine consecutive years. Again, this is based on revenue. The success of Call of Duty: WWII should finally put to rest any concern over franchise fatigue that many had begun to suspect after last year's lackluster sales for Infinite Warfare.
Meanwhile, Destiny 2 - despite all its faults - secured its status as the No. 2 highest selling console game in North America for the year. It also became the biggest PC launch in Activision Publishing history, based on units. Based on unites, Destiny 2 has even outsold its predecessor, Destiny, which was hailed as the "biggest new video game IP launch in history" at the time in 2014.
Activision also revealed that its Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is the No. 1 top-selling remastered collection in PS4 history. Release in June of this year, the remaster became an instant hit with fans, and has remained among the top 10 selling PS4 titles in the U.S. for the year, so far, in units.
