We're on the verge of the next-generation. The eighth generation of video game consoles will kick off in Holiday 2020 with the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Fortnite has been a staple of the seventh generation, being one of the most popular video games of all time.
Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite won't be left behind as we take a step into the next-generation. According to the developer, Fortnite will be a launch title for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (via Polygon). That is to say that is will be available on both of the consoles when they release.
What's more, Epic Games recently unveiled a gameplay demo for Unreal Engine 5 which shows off the incredible visuals that the upcoming game engine is capable of — check that out here.
While the popular battle-royale game will operate using Unreal Engine 4 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at first; the developer confirmed that they're plan to upgrade Fortnite to Unreal Engine 5 in 2021. That isn't to say that they will be ditching Fortnite's recogniseable look in favour of a more realistic one but that everything will simply run and look much better.
Additionally, it's said that Fortnite will support cross-generation play which means that those on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and still join up with or fight against those on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox One. Similarly, your account progress will carry over across the generations of consoles — meaning that you can pick up right where you left off.
Fortnite is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices.
