This Year's CALL OF DUTY Is A Sequel To 2019's MODERN WARFARE; New Evolution Of WARZONE Also Announced

Activision announced that Infinity Ward is developing this year's Call of Duty, which will be a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare reboot, along with a new Warzone experience.

Even though Call of Duty: Vanguard is less than six months old, Activision is already looking ahead to the new Call of Duty, presumably releasing later this year. As part of the developer's community update, it was confirmed that this year's game will be a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019.

For those who didn't play it, 2019's Modern Warfare was a reboot of the incredibly popular sub-series. Set in the present day, the game features a realistic and modern setting and a campaign that follows a CIA officer and British SAS forces as they team up with rebels in the fictional country of Urzikstan to combat invading Russian forces and the terrorist group Al-Qatala. The reboot saw the return of the fan-favorite Captain Price along with other characters from the original series, presenting them in a modern light.

Modern Warfare is one of Call of Duty's most popular sub-series and the 2019 reboot received favorable reviews. Critics hailed its campaign as one of the best in the franchise while its gameplay and multiplayer were also praised. Infinity Ward is returning to develop the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sequel, so there's definitely some big anticipation.

Activision also confirmed that in addition to the Modern Warfare sequel coming later this year, battle royale fans can also look forward to a new Warzone experience. Both games are being developed together from the ground-up by Infinity Ward, with a "massive evolution of Battle Royale with all-new playspace and a new sandbox mode." Both games will be powered by a new game engine.

We're still months away from the release of either game, but Activision could be eager to move on from Call of Duty: Vanguard, which has been viewed as a disappointment both critically and commercially.
