Philippe Therien, the lead designer working on
Marvel's Avengers, recently did an interview (via
Comicbook.com) in which he clarified how the multiplayer aspect of the highly anticipated, upcoming game will work.
Marvel's Avengers will mainly consist of a singleplayer campaign which can be played entirely offline. However, there's also some side mission that you're able to play co-operatively with your friends or other online players.
Therien explained that there's a synergy between each of the available heroes and revealed that players won't be able to stack heroes. Hero stacking is when you're able to have multiple of one character on your team at the same time. When you're playing online in
Marvel's Avengers, you'll have to either sync up your choice of hero with your teammates or take whoever's left.
“We’ve got a cool mix of melee and ranged combat going on, some characters that only work one type or the other. Because we have both multiplayer and campaign you’ll see cases where sometimes the experience is more directed, or some places you’ll just be left to your own devices and left to work out what to do. The Avengers go to many different places in this game, it varies where you’re at.”
Firstly, Therien spoke about the variety of abilities and locations that are available in the game as well as how on-rails the experience will be. Then the lead designer spoke about how each Avenger has their own respective abilities and, because of this, you'll want a full team of heroes rather than four Hulks - for example.
"You have to play as different characters while online. The Avengers all have different skills and talents and we want people to have a fully-fleshed out team. It wouldn’t be the Avengers otherwise.”
Marvel's Avengers is set to release on May 15th, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC.
