Jagex has finally put a date on the end of Legacy accounts. Players of Old School RuneScape and RuneScape who still log in the old way will need to switch to a Jagex Account by next month (November 17th), when the full migration kicks in.
The studio shared the news on Friday (October 16th) through the official Old School RuneScape account on X, along with a recommendation to upgrade early.
What Happens On November 17th
According to the full announcement on the official RuneScape website, every Legacy account will have to make a one-time jump to a Jagex Account starting on that date. Anyone who has not upgraded by then will not be able to log in until they do.
The good news is that the process sounds simple. Players only need their username or login email and their password. Jagex says there is no need to verify the old email address tied to the account, which should help long-time players who signed up with an inbox they lost access to years ago. Character names are also safe, so nobody has to worry about losing the name they have had since the early days.
Players who log in through Steam, Apple, Google, or Game Center do not need to switch. However, they will still need a Jagex Account to use the official Launcher or website features such as Support.
Jagex first introduced Jagex Accounts back in 2023, and the studio says more than 89% of active players have already moved over. That leaves a smaller group of holdouts, and the November date is the final push to bring everyone onto the same system.
A Bigger Character Cap And Upgrade Rewards
Alongside the date, Jagex announced that the number of characters allowed on one Jagex Account is rising from 20 to 50. That will be a big help for players who run several characters, such as ironmen, alts, or skillers, and want them all under a single login.
The studio also listed the benefits that come with the upgrade:
- Up to 50 characters under one login
- Launcher sessions that stay logged in for up to 90 days
- Multi-factor authentication, backup codes, and login notifications
- Live chat support with a J-Mod
- For Old School RuneScape, 20 extra bank slots per character and the Fancier Boots
- For RuneScape, a 5-minute extension to the logout timer
One thing to keep in mind is that upgrading replaces the multi-factor authentication currently on the account. Email MFA becomes the default, so players who rely on an authenticator app should set it up again after moving over.
Jagex has also added character switching on mobile for Old School RuneScape, which makes managing multiple characters on a phone a lot less fiddly.
Launcher Changes For Mac And Linux Players
The announcement also covered some changes to the Jagex Launcher. An Apple Silicon version of the Launcher is set to release by the end of this month. Jagex says MacOS 28 will require it next year, and the minimum Mac specs for the games will go up as part of that change.
Linux players are getting attention too, as a beta version of the Launcher for Linux is available now. Jagex has also removed the need for elevated permissions when installing the Launcher, which should make setup easier on shared or work machines.
For players who prefer third-party clients, Jagex confirmed that approved clients such as RuneLite will keep working with Jagex Accounts. That has been one of the biggest concerns in the Old School RuneScape community whenever account changes come up, so it is good to see it addressed directly.
Why You Should Upgrade Now
Jagex's own advice is to upgrade early, and it is easy to see why. Leaving it until the deadline risks being locked out on the day, especially if a lot of players try to make the switch at once. Upgrading now also unlocks the bank slots, boots, and security features straight away.
The full announcement on the RuneScape website has more details on the process, and players who run into trouble can reach out to Jagex Support before the deadline arrives.
