As promised, today's Marvel Games panel at San Diego Comic-Con was filled with exciting reveals and announcements, including the first look at gameplay from Marvel's Avengers.

Unfortunately, unless you were in attendance, you're going to have to read recaps of what was shown. That's because the gameplay footage won't be made available online until after Gamescom next month. According to Marvel, the demo will be polished and released after Gamescom, which takes place from August 20-24.

Marvel's Avengers was first revealed at E3 last month with a cinematic trailer that provided some context for the upcoming game, which is set five years after a catastrophic accident resulted in massive devastation, leaving the world and peril and super heroes outlawed. But the original cinematic also appeared to show some combat during the A-Day event, and gameplay footage shown at the Marvel Games panel at SDCC showcased this moment.

Based on descriptions around the web, it sounds like the footage showed off the gameplay of the various Avengers, each of which offer a unique form of combat. It concluded with Black Widow defeating Taskmaster, but Captain America seemingly perishing with the giant airship crash.

"This is just the set up for a much longer journey you'll take," teased creative director Shaun Escayg. "This is just the tip of the iceberg."

Escayg also went on to reveal that Marvel's Avengers will feature a main narrative as well as an online multiplayer mode that will allow players to customize their own heroes and take on challenges alongside other players.

Marvel's Avengers is set to launch on May 15, 2020. A special collector's edition, featuring a Captain America statue (posed as he is in the game's memorial statue of the character), will be available for pre-order before the end of the year
