Final Fantasy Resonance’s Free Demo Is Live And Sephiroth Is in The Game

Square Enix put a free Final Fantasy Resonance demo on every platform the full game will hit. PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Xbox on PC. It covers the opening through chapter one in the Kingdom of Grandshelt, about three to five hours. Your save moves into the retail build on October 22. Pre-orders are already up.

The same State of Play trailer that flagged the demo also put Sephiroth on the field. You find him, fight him, and chase a special reward if you win. That sits next to the Visions system already sold in earlier footage: classic leads drop in as equippable spirits. Square Enix has named Cloud, Tidus, and the Warrior of Light. Other coverage has also pointed at Terra and Clive as Vision-style guests. Equip a Vision the way you would any other combat tool and pull their kit into the turn order. Check it out below:

Resonance is the first Final Fantasy game in HD-2D, the pixel-plus-3D look Square Enix used on Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy. Battles are turn-based with a modern command layer, not the ATB bar from the numbered entries. Chocobos, espers, and airships are back. Square Enix is framing it as a console RPG built on the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the 2015 gacha that shut down in 2025. The company line is rebuild, not a straight port. New overworld, voiced scenes, pixel-rendered cinematics, and a battle system made for sticks instead of a phone screen.

Lancarse is co-developing with Square Enix. Hiroto Furuya directs. Producers are Kei Hirono and Keisuke Nakashima. The party you start with is Rain, Lasswell, and Fina, with Lid in the early group from the mobile arc. English voices include Clifford Chapin as Rain, Alejandro Saab as Lasswell, and Lizzie Freeman as Fina. Japanese voices include Nobuhiko Okamoto, Yusuke Kobayashi, and Akane Fujita. The main story hook is the Earth Crystal going down to Veritas of the Dark (Ian Sinclair / Akio Otsuka). The job is to keep the rest of the crystals standing.

Brave Exvius season one was the Lapis arc. Resonance is that spine with the gacha mechanics peeled off. No energy gates. No banner pulls required to finish chapter one. Visions replace the old collect-a-hero treadmill as the crossover layer. Sephiroth as a hunt-and-challenge fight is the State of Play spike. Square Enix has not said whether that fight sits inside the demo or only in the October build. The press note only says you can find and challenge him in the upcoming game.

Music is a mix of Brave Exvius and War of the Visions tracks plus 33 new pieces from Noriyasu Agematsu. A soundtrack with 87 returning cuts and those new ones is dated October 28, six days after launch.

The full game is one date on every listed platform: October 22, 2026. Switch 1 and Switch 2 will both get it. Square Enix’s series line still cites more than 212 million Final Fantasy units sold. Resonance is not a mainline number. It is the first time the brand has used this art style, and the first time the Brave Exvius opening has been rebuilt as a boxed RPG you can finish without a shop.

If you already burned Grandshelt on a phone, the demo is the test of whether the rebuild is different enough to buy again. If you never touched Brave Exvius, it is a 3-to-5-hour sample of turn-based Final Fantasy with Cloud and a Sephiroth hunt attached. Download it, dump chapter one, keep the save file for October.
