Final Fantasy Resonance is off to a huge start on PC. The new HD-2D RPG from Square Enix reached a peak of 42,885 concurrent players on Steam yesterday, according to SteamDB, giving it the highest Steam peak ever recorded for a single-player Final Fantasy game.
That number puts it ahead of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which peaked at 40,564 players when it launched on PC in January 2025.
Second Only To Final Fantasy XIV
Resonance launched on Thursday and kept climbing through its first weekend. Earlier on Saturday it had reached 38,182 players, which placed it third among Final Fantasy games on Steam. By Sunday it had moved past Rebirth into second place overall.
The only Final Fantasy game with a bigger Steam peak is Final Fantasy XIV, which hit 95,150 concurrent players in December 2021 around the launch of the Endwalker expansion. Since FF14 is an MMO, that makes Resonance the series' most-played single-player release on Steam at its peak.
Player reviews have been just as strong. Resonance holds an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam, with 97 percent of more than 3,000 user reviews recommending it.
The First HD-2D Final Fantasy
Resonance is the first Final Fantasy game built in the HD-2D style, which mixes pixel-art characters with detailed 3D environments and lighting effects. Square Enix has used the look in games like Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy and the Dragon Quest III remake, and it has become one of the publisher's most recognizable styles.
The game is developed by Square Enix with LANCARSE, part of Creative Studio 5, and is produced by Keisuke Nakashima. It is available on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X and S, and PC through Steam and Xbox. A free demo is also available, and progress carries over into the full game.
A New Take On Brave Exvius
Longtime mobile players will recognize the story. Resonance retells the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the gacha RPG that shut down in 2025, which Square Enix says has been "refined and extensively rebuilt" for this release.
Players follow Rain, a knight of the kingdom of Grandshelt, and his friend Lasswell, as the two set out on their journey together. Combat is turn-based and includes a Stagger system, along with Visions, summoned heroes from across the Final Fantasy series who join battles and unlock special Resonance attacks.
Several familiar faces show up. Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light appear in the game, and Squall is also among the Visions players can call on. Optional content includes a showdown with Gilgamesh, a Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms and a battle with the series favorite superboss Ultima Weapon.
Why The Numbers Matter
Final Fantasy has sold more than 215 million units worldwide, but the series has had a mixed history on PC, where major releases often arrive months or years after their console debuts. Resonance launched on PC on day one alongside every major console, and the Steam numbers suggest that strategy paid off.
The result is also interesting because Resonance is a smaller, more traditional project than recent mainline entries. A classic-style turn-based RPG with sprite-based characters outperforming the PC launch of a big-budget game like Rebirth shows how much appetite there still is for the series' older style.
Concurrent player counts usually peak during a game's first weekend, so it may be difficult for Resonance to climb much higher. Still, holding the single-player record on Steam is a strong start for the first HD-2D Final Fantasy, and it could encourage Square Enix to bring more of the series to the style.
