Nightdive Studios’ remake of System Shock was previously released on PC in 2023 to critical acclaim. Now the critically acclaimed remake is making its way to consoles in May.
Announced today, System Shock, the award-winning sci-fi survival classic, is set to arrive on May 21, 2024. The game will be playable on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
Set in the year 2072, a psychotic rogue AI known as SHODAN has taken control of Citadel Station and turned the crew into an army of cyborgs and robots. With its sights now set on destroying Earth, you -- a nameless hacker -- must explore and battle your way through the depths of the space station in an attempt to stop SHODAN and avert humanity's destruction.
The remake offers updated gameplay controls (redesigned to support PlayStation and Xbox gamepads) and improved visuals, with support up to 4K 60FPS visuals on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Players can also enjoy an overhauled interface, new sounds and music, and the option to choose between a male or female-presenting Hacker protagonist.
Brace yourself for a heart-pounding adventure where you'll face mutated monstrosities, hack your way through deadly puzzles, and unravel the dark secrets of a sinister AI.
The original System Shock was released in 1994 for PC. Developed by LookingGlass Technologies under the direction of Doug Church with Warren Spector as producer, the game's 3D engine, physics simulation and complex gameplay were considered a major breakthrough. It was both innovative and influential, although just a moderate commercial success.
But it's now found new life thanks to Nightdive Studios' remake. Released of PC in May 2023, the remake received favorable reviews. A faithful recreation, it kept all of the original's mechanics -- for better or worse -- while updating the visuals to modernized standards. BUt not everyone was on board with the game's design, which puts an emphasis on emergent gameplay.
If you never played the original and haven't played the remake on PC, this port to consoles provides another opportunity to experience a groundbreaking classic.
"Face perilous traps, puzzles, and a legion of hostile and mutated creatures — created and controlled by the delightfully villainous SHODAN herself," the synopsis teases.
System Shock releases on May 21, 2024, and will be available in both physical and digital formats on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It will only be available digitally on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
