Spyro fans will be a little disappointed to find out that Activision has decided to do the most Activision thing of all and simply include one of the games in the physical copy of
Spyro: Reignited Trilogy and requiring an internet connection to download the other games.
Spyro: Reignited Trilogy will include
Spyro the Dragon in the disc, while
Spyro: Ripto's Rage! and
Spyro: Year of the Dragon will be come in download code form. This is very disappointed given that there is no reason to not include all three games in the blu-ray—at least not due to technical limitations.
Some people actually prefer getting their physical copies of the games and having only one
Spyro game in physical form and two others in digital form is not ideal—which is the main reason why some
Spyro fans are holding off from getting the game until Activision clarifies the whole thing.
Activision has also published the
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and those games came all in one disc. Being both PlayStation 1 games, it's safe to assume all three games of Spyro could've fit just fine in one blu-ray disc. Even the Nintendo Switch version of the
N. Sane Trilogy comes in one single cartridge, which are definitely more expensive than a blu ray disc—meaning that Activision probably didn't even cheapen out.
When
Destructoid reached out to Activision asking for calrification, this is the reply they got:
"
The global launch date of Spyro Reignited Trilogy is Sept. 21; and we're excited for fans to play all three reignited games on that day. As with most games today, downloading an update after purchase is quite common. The language on packaging and on the web is to let players know the requirements for Spyro Reignited Trilogy".
In short, Activision simply doesn't want to address the issue, nor acknowledge that it even is an issue. We will now have to wait until
Spyro: Reignited Trilogy comes out and see if this is actually going to cause any backlash if fans opt out of buying the game physically, and choose not to go digital—especially because some people simply don't like purchasing digital games when a physical copy may be on the way; a real physical copy, not one that comes with download codes.
