Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, one of the most beloved Star Wars video games of all time, is rumored to be in development. Furthermore, rumors state this game is being developed outside of EA and BioWare, the studio behind the original game.
As VGC, who initially reported the story points out, talks of a new KOTOR game being in the works have been going on for a while. But this is the first we've heard of another studio heading up development on it. And the reports come from multiple sources, including Star Wars insider Bespin Bulletin, which along with its own sources references comments made by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who suggested the KOTOR project was in development somewhere unexpected.
“Amongst my digging, I heard there is a Knights of the Old Republic project in development somewhere,” Bespin Bulletin claimed. “I talked to a couple of people, and I also found out that Jason Schreier said that it’s not with EA, and we’ll ‘never guess’ who the studio is that’s making this game.”
"Nobody's going to guess right that's for sure," Schreier teased on the popular gaming forum resetera.
The rumor comes on the heels of the recent branding of Lucasfilm Games, which is now the official umbrella for all Star Wars gaming projects. Shortly after Lucasfilm Games was introduced, it was announced that Ubisoft was working on an open-world Star Wars game; however, this doesn't appear to be related to KOTOR. The insider also mentioned a "bounty hunter game" being in development somewhere while EA is working on a "smaller" Star Wars game.
“I don’t know if the bounty hunter game is with them or if it’s with Ubisoft. But yeah, EA is working on stuff and there’s another unannounced [Star Wars] game at EA, which I have no idea what it is. I don’t think it’s Battlefront 3," the source claimed.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was developed by BioWare and released in 2003. The beloved RPG is set about 4,000 years prior to the formation of the Galactic Empire and tells an intriguing Jedi versus Sith story. A sequel, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and released in 2004.
