When Rocksteady's new Suicide Squad game was announced to be a Games As A Service (GaaS) title, the fan backlash was almost immediate.
As the follow-up to Rocksteady's fan-favorite Batman Arkham trilogy expectations were high and the announcement of a GaaS title was simply not what the fandom was looking to see.
After going quiet for a number of months, a new 20-minute gameplay trailer was released along with a trailer that revealed Task Force X's classic costumes will be a pre-order bonus for the title.
The game's fast-paced combat takes center stage as the trailer seems to convey that the development team has moved away from creating a bullet sponge title. The video also didn't focus on any loot, which has fans thinking that the game may no longer be a "shooter looter." It remains to be seen whether this element of the game will be addressed in a future video.
As to how the Suicide Squad actually plans to kill the Justice League, the video reveals that they'll actually break into the Hall of Justice's armory and steal a few useful items to even the playing field, including a few of Batman's gadgets, Dr. Sivana’s Speed Force Gauntlet and more. It also appears that the Penguin will be present in this game, functioning as an arms dealer that allows the player to enhance their equipment and increase their power.
Is the narrative around the game beginning to turn? While some gamers are convinced that the title still has all the trappings of the worst that Games As A Service has to offer, more optimistic gamers are hopeful that Rocksteady is leaning more into the Action-RPG genre.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be released on February 2, 2024, for the PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. It will feature the final voice performance of Kevin Conroy as Batman.
