Nioh is an action role-playing video game developed by Team Ninja, the creators of the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series for PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows, based on an unfinished Akira Kurosawa script. Nioh is set in 1600 within a fictionalized dark fantasy version of the late Sengoku period with protagonist William, a blonde-haired Irishman who arrives in Japan to pursuit his enemy.
According to review aggregator Metacritic, Nioh was a major success, achieving an average critic rating of 88/100 with 100 reviews, making it one of the best-reviewed games for PlayStation 4. Team Ninja has announced via Twitter that their latest project has managed to sell over 2 million copies worldwide, and that impressive figure applies to both digital and physical copies of Nioh.
Previously, when Koei Tecmo revealed its latest financial results in April 2018, the company noted that 1,900,000 copies of Nioh had been shipped worldwide. The success of Nioh could mean the start of a new franchise for the studio. Considering that the first Nioh was announced in 2004 and released 13 years later, let's hope Team Ninja will manage to develop a possible sequel in a shorter period of time.
