Capcom has filed an
Onimusha trademark, suggesting that a sequel, remaster, or just a mobile version of the beloved series could be on its way. The publisher has recently registered
Onimusha trademarks in Mexico, Canada, the Philippines, Australia, and with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, meaning that the series could be brought to life after more than 12 years of absence.
The last mainline release was
Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, which launched in 2006 on PlayStation 2. The positive critical reception didn't save the game from underperforming commercially. Not counting
Onimusha: Warlords and other spin-offs, the mainline series was released exclusively on PS2. The series has helped to shape many franchises, including
Dark Souls, The Witcher, and last year's
Nioh.
There's a chance that the franchise which made use of the historic figures that shaped Japan's history, retelling their stories with supernatural elements, will return in its full glory soon, but considering that Capcom has recently released remastered versions of
Devil May Cry 1-3, Resident Evil, and
DuckTales, a port of the first four games is a real possibility. Only time will tell when (and most importantly, if) Capcom's seventh best-selling franchise will return to the world of the living. Check out the screenshot from the The World Intellectual Property Organization website below:
