Ubisoft Decided To Add Star Fox To STARLINK: BATTLE FOR ATLAS Before They Got Permission From Nintendo

Nintendo's Star Fox joined Ubisoft's Starlink: Battle for Atlas as a playable character, but Ubisoft has recently revealed that they began working on the crossover before they got permission from the Big N.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas is a new intellecxtual property developed and published by Ubisoft tht was released last week for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. The game is an open-world action game that takes players into space to save the Atlas System from the Forgotten Legion.

While the game has been getting pretty good reviews, most video game media outlets agree on one thing: the Nintendo Switch version is the recommended version to get due to featuring characters of Nintendo's most neglected franchises: Star Fox.

The Star Fox Team of Mercenaries joining Ubisoft's new space action-adventure game made everyone direct their attention to Starlink: Battle for Atlas, especially since Nintendo has been neglecting their franchise for a while, and when they finally released Star Fox Zero on the Wii U, it was met with disappointing reviews because of its gimmicky controls; that completely ruined the experience for many fans of the series.

In a recent interview, Starlink: Battle for Atlas game producer Matthe Rose revealed that they always wanted Star Fox to join the game, but they actually began working on the crossover way before Nintendo green-lit their request to do so.

"Yeah, so, I mean, we had a lot of initial discussions back and forth, you know, through… I would say intermediaries at both companies. It was more discussions of 'okay, the team… Nintendo is interested and they think it’s a promising game on Switch', it’s another big open-world game", explained Rose as he compares the open-worldness of Starlink: Battle for Atlas to Nintendo's very own The Legend of Zelda series; which has seen a lot of success over the years, but more in particular with Breath of the Wild: the latest entry in the series.

"Obviously Zelda has been a big success for them and, so that was already exciting but, you know, we started talking about 'okay, the team is really, really excited and passionate to pitch this potential collaboration and a collaboration involving Star Fox' and so from there these discussions simmer for a long time".

"So we always thought 'maybe, maybe they’ll be interested. Maybe this is something we can do' and so we started right away, because we were like 'we’re so excited by even them having this conversation with us, even though they hadn’t confirmed anything'. And so we started working. We started drawing concepts, we made a 3D-printed Arwing that had their proper connectors and toys in it so that you could take it apart and everything".

Starlink: Battle for Atlas introducing Star Fox was a very unexpected surprise during this year's E3, catching the eye of attendees almost instantly. So, while Ubisoft may not have had permission to begin working on the Star Fox crossover, it is a nice thing that they did it any way. Ubisoft and Nintendo have a great relationship and hopefully Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and Starlink: Battle For Atlas are only the first in future collaboration projects between the two companies.

Lead a group of heroic interstellar pilots who use modular starships to mix and match their unique gear and skills on the fly. Travel the star system to unite the galaxy against villainous destructive forces.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
