The original Donkey Kong from the 1981 Arcade game, Cranky Kong, who as confirmed by the trailer, is not Donkey's father but his grandfather, which certainly puts an end to those fan theories going around online. And now he's back in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze as the character becomes playable for the first time.

Cranky Kong is the last character introduced in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and he will show he's still got it in him as he canes those Snowmads out of Donkey Kong Island and back to the North Sea. Cranky can use his cane as either a weapon to hit enemies, a pogo stick to go through spikes like they're nothing, and can also shoot his denture popgun because, why not?

Just like the other playable Kongs in the game, Cranky will also be selectable from the get-go in Hard Mode, or be a playable character in Co-op mode as the second player. With Cranky, Diddy, Dixie, Donkey and the newly added Funky, players will have a wide variety of characters to play as in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze as the game becomes available in only but a couple of days.

Arctic invaders have turned Donkey Kong Island into their personal frozen fortress, and it’s up to you to save the day. Barrel-blast into this critically acclaimed adventure, complete with a banana-bunch of new features. Traverse islands packed with platforming perfection and nonstop action as the classic Kongs in the original game, or mix things up by playing the story as Funky Kong in the new Funky Mode!

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is coming out exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on the 4th of May.
