Retro Studios have done a great job reviving the series that pretty much died when the Rare partnership with Nintendo ended.
Donkey Kong Country Returns was released for the Wii in 2010 and brought new life into the series that had been on hiatus since
Donkey Kong Country 3 or, arguably,
Donkey Kong 64.
Then
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze came out for the Nintendo Wii U and it was considered a masterpiece. A masterpiece that no one played because of the Wii U's poor sales. Which is why the game being ported to the Nintendo Switch is such a great idea. The Nintendo Switch is one of Nintendo's most successful, and popular consoles in years and it doesn't seem like it's stopping any time soon.
Just today the Nintendo Switch was announced to have
sold over 17 million consoles and over 69 million games, being
Super Mario Odyssey one of the highlights in terms of sales. And that's the kind of success that Retro Studios' Donkey Kong franchise desperately needs, because it is a great series revival that many people missed out on.
Thankfully,
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is only a week away from its official release and Nintendo has recently released an overview trailer showing off some of the game's features. The game promises to have players traversing through the jungle, the savanna, deep and treacherous waters and, of course,
Donkey Kong Island.
Arctic invaders have turned Donkey Kong Island into their personal frozen fortress, and it’s up to you to save the day. Barrel-blast into this critically acclaimed adventure, complete with a banana-bunch of new features. Traverse islands packed with platforming perfection and nonstop action as the classic Kongs in the original game, or mix things up by playing the story as Funky Kong in the new Funky Mode!
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is coming out exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on the 4th of May.
