GoldenEye 007, one of the most beloved first-person shooters of all-time, is coming to Xbox consoles and Nintendo Switch. We don't know exactly when the Nintendo 64 classic will be released, only that it's "coming soon."

When it does arrive, it will be playable on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One as part of Xbox Game Pass. Additionally, if you own a digital copy of Rare Replay, you'll be able to download GoldenEye 007 free of charge as well.

For Nintendo Switch, the game will be made available through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service.

It should be noted that this isn't a full-fledged remake of the N64 game, but it has been "faithfully recreated" for Xbox consoles. This includes improved control options (including dual analogue stick support), native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD (where supported), a consistent refresh rate and. And yes, the iconic split-screen local multiplayer mode will be included.

The Nintendo Switch version won't have all of the same features as the Xbox, but does have the addition of online multiplayer. This will be the first time ever that fans of GoldenEye 007 will be able to play the wonderfully addicting multiplayer online.

Developed by Rare, GoldenEye 007 originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997. Based on the 1995 James Bond film, players take control of the famous secret agent James Bond and play through a series of levels with varying objectives. The game was a critical and commercial success with many praising the immersive detailed environments, realistic animations, and stealth shooter gameplay. While gamers today take many of these elements for shooter, it was groundbreaking at the time.

But perhaps the most talked-about feature for GoldenEye 007, even to this day, is its multiplayer mode where up to four players could compete in deathmatch via split-screen. If you were a gamer in the '90s, there's a good chance you spent countless nights playing GoldenEye 007's multiplayer for hours on end with friends.

A remake of GoldenEye 007 was released in 2010 for the Nintendo Wii, followed by an enhanced port a year later for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but it failed to attract the same commercial success as the original. While there is certainly no shortage of shooters to choose from these days, GoldenEye 007 remains one of the most beloved games of all-time. It's just a shame we won't be able to enjoy the multiplayer online on Xbox.

As of this writing, it doesn't appear GoldenEye 007 will be coming to PlayStation, likely due to licensing and rights issues.
