A Netflix exec recently was quoted at a Silicon Valley press conference where he admitted that it's unlikely that Netflix will suddenly pop up on the Switch one day.
Scott Mirer, Netflix's VP of Device Partner Ecosystem remarked, "“In the case of the Switch, they [Nintendo] were very focused at launch not on video-use cases, but on gaming cases, video was not a priority for them. Whether that changes over time, we have a great relationship with them and look at the possibility of [supporting] the Switch. We each have opportunity cost around that, but at some point, it might happen.”
In short, Nintendo is focusing on making video games, not making the Switch an entertainment hub for the Living Room. Netflix is certainly open to the idea but Nintendo has to first approach the table.
However, there appears to be more to the situation than what Mirer is admitting as Hulu and NicoNico (the largest streaming platform in Japan) are already supported by the Switch. Did Hulu negotiate some sort of exclusivity? As the leading platform worldwide, is Netflix negotiating for better terms than what were offered to Hulu and NicoNico? Let us know what you think in the comment section below. I'm sure a lot of Switch owners would love to stream the latest episode of Jessica Jones season 2 while laying in bed.
