Square Enix has definitely made a statement by releasing
Octopath Traveler; a game that harkens back to RPGs from the 16-bit era. Like it is to be expected from a developer like Square Enix, their latest role-playing game is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Last week, Nintendo and Square Enix announced that
Octopath Traveler managed to ship 1 million units in less than a month since the game released worldwide—quite an impressive feat considering that it is a Nintendo Switch exclusive. With all this success coming their way, Square Enix should already be thinking about future games in the same vein of
Octopath Traveler, or at least that's what fans would like.
It turns out that we've got some great news for fans of
Octopath Traveler as Square Enix has revealed that the game's success has made them rethink their strategy moving forward, at least when it comes to more JRPGs that cater to old Square Enix game fans.
According to WallStreet Journal Tech Reporter, Takashi Mochizuki, Square Enix has seen some strong figures regarding
Octopath Traveler sales, which he says exceeded expectations in the US and Europe. The developer thinks their success comes from a growth in interest regarding JRPGs in recent years plus classic game design that appeals to old Square Enix game fans, as well as the new HD-2D style
Octopath Traveler has.
When asked if they thought the Nintendo Switch was a proper console for middle-range games, Square Enix simply replied with a 'Yes', while also saying that we should expect more games like
Octopath Traveler in the future. When talking about developing said games for other platforms, Square Enix replied with a "where appropriate", which doesn't say they will be making games for other platforms—but definitely not ruling it out.
Eight travelers. Eight adventures. Eight roles to play in a new world brought to life by Square Enix. Explore each traveler’s story and use their abilities in and out of battle. Will you expand your horizons as the Merchant or track down a traitor as the Warrior? Where will you go? Who will join you? You alone can choose your path.
Octopath Traveler is available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch right now.
