Octopath Traveller is a role-playing action game developed by Square Enix . The game's concept is that you can choose 8 different characters, each with a different story, and go on your own adventure where you'll meet other people and fight each character's own battles. The game was first announced on the 13th of January, 2017 during the Nintendo Switch presentation, and ws one of the first titles to be confirmed as an exclusive for the console.
The game's art style is based off the 16-bit era with sprites for the characters and beautifully realised backgrounds but with some lighting effects from a more current gen, which give the game a very unique aesthetic that reminds us of other 16-bit RPGs on the Super Nintendo like
Chrono Trigger or
Final Fantasy III(
Final Fantasy VI in Japan).
An
Octopath Traveller demo was released in September 2017 and it allowed players to choose between the dancer
Primrose, or the warrior
Olberic, as the first 2 officially revealed characters for the game. Two more characters were introduced later on. The new characters were
Tressa, the Merchant, and
Alfyn, the Apothecary.
Today we got a new character trailer revealing two more protagonists, making it a total of 6 officially revealed characters for
Octopath Traveller.
This new trailer focuses on H'aanit who is a hunter and can fight enemies with her bow and arrows, who goes on an adventure in search of her master who vanished pursuing a dreadful fiend. Her
Path Action is
Provoke, which means she can use beasts during combat or to open paths blocked by foes.
Therion is the other character introduced in this trailer, he's a thief who's been hired by a mysterious client to retrieve a rare gemstone. As a thief, his
Path Action is
Steal which allow them to steal rare items, not available in stores, from people he encounters on the way.
The game is also introducing Noble & Rogue Path Actions that will change the way your character obtains items. Noble allows players to get items by purchasing them while the Rogue path allows players to get items by stealing them. The trick is that your ability to use these paths will be determined by your character's own limitations.
So, for instance, using
Noble path may depend on your character having a certain level or on how much in-game currency you have.
Rogue actions, on the other hand, are not limited by level and can be used at any time, but if you fail to use them, your reputation will suffer and townspeople may be less receptive to your actions. It sure adds a lot more depth to the game and it sounds like a great way of increasing the game's replayability.
