While
Child of Light Creative Director Patrick Plourde teased a sequel to one of the best-reviewed video games created at Ubisoft Montreal last year, we haven't heard anything substantial about the promising project for a long time – as it seems that the production has unfortunately been canceled.
In an interview with Video Games Chronicle, Plourde revealed that
Child of Light 2 was supposed to be a full-blown prequel to the first game, with "
childhood friends growing apart as they become adults."
“
I know the major beats, the location, and that it would feature multiple protagonists,” he explained. “
It would have two protagonists going on different paths in life with different motivations, linked by their friendship.” According to Plourde, the prequel would be inspired by the ballet
Swan Lake, examining the nature of "
both love and friendship, as well as how people change as they grow up."
Although it all sounds great, the bad news is that we won't get to play it anytime soon. “
I don’t know if there’s a Child of Light 2 that is in production, Ubisoft is big, but I’m not working on it,” Plourde said. “
Right now, I don’t think there’s a Child of Light 2 being produced… I’m not holding my breath.”
“
I don’t think it’s the type of game that Ubisoft wants to make…The company is not an adolescent company, it is a mature company. And the other things [...], it’s still supported – we ported it on Switch and we’re still selling a bunch of copies, but it’s just that right now it’s all about games as a service. We can make money out of it, but you can make more money elsewhere. That’s the problem of not being independent while making this” – but there is a beacon of hope when it comes to
CoL2.
As you may remember, Ubisoft is working on a live-action
Child of Light TV series as part of Ubisoft's Women's Film and Television Fellowship. With the show on the horizon, it would make sense to launch a new
Child of Light game to accompany the big TV release – so keep believing,
Child of Light fans.
Join Aurora on her journey to save her ailing father and a lost kingdom in the magical world of Lemuria – along the way she'll discover that her destiny may be far greater than she dreamed.
Child Of Light is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and PC.
