Fall Guys players have been waiting a long time for some good news, and it just came from the top. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said yesterday (October 17th) that a "huge retooling" of the game is underway, and he told fans not to give up on it.
Sweeney made the comment on X while shooting down a joke post claiming that Disney had bought developer Mediatonic from Epic. That claim was fake, and Sweeney was quick to say so before turning his attention to the game itself.
That is all Sweeney said, so there are no details yet on what the retooling involves, when it will be ready, or what the "new things" might be. Even so, it is the clearest sign in a long while that Epic still has plans for its bean battle royale.
Why Fans Have Been Worried
The reason this one reply got so much attention is that Fall Guys has felt a little stuck for a while now. Epic bought Mediatonic back in 2021, and the game went free-to-play in June 2022 with a big relaunch on every major platform. For a while after that, it ran on a steady rhythm of numbered seasons, each with new rounds, costumes, and a fresh pass to work through.
That rhythm changed in August 2023, when the game moved away from traditional seasons. Since then, updates have tended to be smaller and more spread out. The game was also hit by Epic's layoffs in late 2023, which affected a large part of the Mediatonic team, and many players have been reading every quiet month as a bad sign ever since.
The official news feed for the game shows how things have looked this year. In January, Epic brought Fall Guys characters into Fortnite as part of the Crown Jam event. In March, the team announced a price increase for Show-Bucks, which kicked in on April 8th. The most recent patch, released in late August, focused on anti-cheat improvements, stability work, level fixes, and bringing back Blast Ball levels from the vault.
Those are all fair updates for a live game, but none of them are the kind of big content drop that brings lapsed players back. That is why so many fans responded to Sweeney's reply with a mix of hope and caution, with a lot of them asking for a timeline he did not give.
What A Retooling Could Mean
Sweeney's wording is worth looking at closely. He made no mention of a new season or mode, and instead said the retooling "will make new things possible," which sounds a lot more like work on the tech and tools behind the game than a single update.
That would fit with how Epic has been treating the game lately. Fall Guys already has its own Creative mode, where players can build and share their own rounds, and Epic has spent the last few years tying more of its games and tools together around Fortnite and Unreal Engine. A deeper rebuild of how Fall Guys rounds are made, shared, or played across Epic's ecosystem would be one way to open up those "new things," though Epic has not said anything of the sort yet.
It could also simply mean the team is rebuilding parts of the game that have been holding back bigger updates. Live games that have been running for years often reach a point where old systems make new content slow and expensive to produce, and a retooling can be the step that has to happen before fresh content starts flowing again.
Whatever form it takes, Sweeney's choice of the word "huge" suggests this is more than a small patch. Fans will now be watching the official Fall Guys channels closely for the first real look at what is coming.
The Disney Rumor Was Never Real
For anyone who saw the post Sweeney was replying to, it is worth being clear that Disney has not bought Mediatonic or Fall Guys. The post he responded to was a joke written up like breaking news, and Sweeney's "Not so" puts that to rest. Disney does have a large investment in Epic and a growing partnership with Fortnite, which is likely why the fake headline fooled a few people at first.
For now, Fall Guys is still free-to-play on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the Epic Games Store. Players who have drifted away may want to keep it installed, because it sounds like the next big chapter for the game is being built right now.
Are you ready to jump back into Fall Guys once this retooling lands, or will it take a lot more than a CEO's reply to win you back?
