Universal Pictures has officially pulled back the curtain on Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the follow-up to their 2023 box office hit based on the iconic horror video game franchise. The studio unveiled the first trailer during Universal’s presentation at CinemaCon, teasing a darker, more expansive chapter in the saga of haunted animatronics and the people caught in their path. Now the teaser has been posted online and is available to the public. Watch the new teaser down below:

Directed once again by Emma Tammi, the sequel breaks new ground by taking the horror outside of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While the original game’s sequel was a prequel, this movie is a direct continuation, bringing back the core cast: Josh Hutcherson as Mike, Piper Rubio as his daughter Abby, Elizabeth Lail as police officer Vanessa, and Matthew Lillard as the sinister William Afton.

The teaser begins on a familiar note: a close-up of an animatronic’s eyes flickering to life under a sign reading “Welcome Back.” A haunting voiceover asks, “Are you ready to start the show?” What follows is a quick series of chilling sequences, including Mike discovering a note from Abby who’s gone to “fix her friends,” Vanessa issuing a dire warning—“They’re out there… everywhere”—and a man being attacked in a school hallway.

In the final moments, viewers hear a familiar voice yell “Showtime!”—likely William Afton, though his appearance is notably absent. That may hint at the fan theory that he will return in the animatronic form of Springtrap, a major figure from the third game in the series.

Unlike the first film, which received a simultaneous streaming and theatrical release, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will debut exclusively in theaters. Blumhouse co-founder Jason Blum confirmed the shift during the presentation, signaling the studio’s confidence in its box office potential. The original film had a reported $20 million budget and grossed $297.1 million. Which means that with the exclusive theatrical release, we could see more longtime fans and newcomers watching the film in theaters. Leading to a much bigger gross revenue at the box office when it makes it's grand debut.

The sequel's bold choice to move the horror into the wider world could mark a major turning point for the film franchise, expanding the mythos and being different from the games, while staying true to its eerie roots.

What are your thoughts on the trailer? Have you played the Five Nights At Freddy's games? Which character is your favorite?
