The Shantae series has been around for quitea a very long time now, to the point it has already been established as one of the most popular indie series out there. Sure, it was initially published by Capcom, but that ship has already sailed, but developer WayForward has always been in charge of development, and they know very well how to deliver top quality products.

In fact, the very first Shantae game was released for the Game Boy in June of 2002, and the series has managed to remain one of the few series that has always been a 2D side-scrolling platformer; making us wonder why the series has never made the jump to 3D.

In a recent interview with US Gamer, Shantae series co-creator Matt bozon — who is also the director for Shantae and the Seven Sirens, the latest entry in the series — was asked where he'd see the series going now that the next generation of consoles is drawing closer by the minute.

"We've talked for years about taking Shantae into a 3D polygonal world. But that's never happened. I can't say if this generation will be "the one," but it's something we'll probably consider again when the time is right," replied Bozon.

"I'd also love to play around with some kind of Shantae adventure in VR, or something musical in nature. We’ll have to wait and see. Anything can happen!"

It would be great to see the long-running Shantae series make the jump to 3D at some point, but Shantae is also one of the series that has managed to be consistent in 2D, which is probably one of the reasons players know what they want from the series.

Bozon really seems to want to explore several possibilities with the Shantae series, and a 3D game is more than plausible. Whatever it is that WayForward decides to do with the series in the future, it will likely be received positively by fans of the Half Genie Hero.

Shantae is back in an all-new tropical adventure! In Shantae and the Seven Sirens, the Half-Genie hero gains new Fusion Magic abilities to explore a vast sunken city, makes new Half-Genie friends, and battles the mysterious Seven Sirens in her biggest, most thrilling quest yet! Featuring multiple towns and more labyrinths than ever before, an awesome aquatic journey full of danger and discovery awaits!

Shantae and the Seven Sirens is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC.
