SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2: The Sequel To The Blockbuster Film Has Announced Its Official Release Date

For video game movies, the level of box office domination has not reached the same heights as other genres like comic book movies, for quite some time. From the less than humble beginnings of the Super Mario Bros. movie to the "its not perfect but its good enough" films like the original Mortal Kombat and the Resident Evil series, video game movies have deserved a chance to show what they can do. 

Over the past few years, the tides have begun to shift in favor of the genre with the recent releases of the live-action Tomb Raider film and Detective Pikachu. While the former showed that with a substantial budget and a tight script, a good story and faithful adaptation could exist in the same movie; the latter showed that all of that coupled with a lighter tone and a "spark" of humor could create a true blockbuster.

Following the massive success of the Detective Pikachu film, Sega and Paramount Pictures were hard at work to create a film adaption of the blue blur himself Sonic the Hedgehog. While there were some design hiccups, to say the least, the film released to massive critical acclaim, making just over $70 million in its opening weekend. Following the massive box office return, a sequel was fast-tracked into production. 

While films have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it looks like the future will be much brighter, following an announcement from Paramount Pictures, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be running into theaters in April of 2022! Make sure to share your thoughts on the news in the comments below!
