Distributor Starbreeze and OtherSide Entertainment have mutually agreed to sell back the publishing rights to OtherSide for System Shock 3, the companies announced yesterday. Starbreeze, the Swedish studio responsible for The Darkness and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, expects to be fully reimbursed for costs the company has had in connection with development of the game.

I believe this is the best solution for us, although it is sad that we cannot complete the project with OtherSide. System Shock 3 is a fantastic title developed in cooperation with the industry legend Warren Spector and I am looking forward to seeing the game released”, said CEO Mikael Nermark.

Starbreeze, which acquired the publishing rights for System Shock 3 in 2017, was supposed to invest $12 million to bring the remake to PC and "other platforms" (possibly meaning PlayStation 4 and Xbox One). As previously announced, Starbreeze will still be focusing on its core business of games development and publishing, as the company holds publishing titles for Psychonauts 2 and Ten Crowns.

After two decades, Nightdive Studios is rebooting and re-imagining the original System Shock. We will keep the new game true to the classic experience, keeping all the things you loved while giving today's gamers the modern look and feel expected from a great game.

System Shock 3 is set to release in 2020.
