Skytorn was announced a good couple of years ago eying a 2015 release date, long before the debut of the smashing hit Celeste. Following the outstanding critical and sales success of Celeste, Noel Berry's development team has decided to take a closer look at Skytron and their potential next moves, resulting in the cancelation of that ambitious procedurally generated action adventure video game.

"We’re no longer going to be finishing Skytorn. [...] I’m really sorry for those of you who were excited about this game. We were too," independent game developer and member of the team behind 2018 hit Celeste Noel Berry announced on Medium. "We poured a lot of time, energy, and heart into the project and we’re definitely sad it’s never going to see the commercial release we were hoping for."

"There’s a bunch of reasons, but the main one is… Skytorn just never figured out what it was," Berry added. "If we were to finish Skytorn I believe it would require us to throw away a lot of the code & gameplay design. A lot of aspects could be kept — our story, the art, the sounds & music, the general theme — but the gameplay would need to go. And at this point, we’ve all learned a lot. As much as we all love Skytorn and how much it’s meant to us over the last several years, we’re excited for new things and new projects. I’m okay saying it was an amazing learning experience, and we’ll take all these lessons onto our next project."

Berry said the Celeste team at Matt Makes Games is sticking together and working hard on something new, but they are not ready to talk about it yet, as the studio will share more details in 2019.

Centuries after a mysterious cataclysm tore the world apart, humans have taken to the skies - ferrying their kin in airships, searching the remains for artifacts and survivors. Explorer Névoa ventures out across uncharted islands, left floating in the sky. Alone and armed only with a shovel, she is determined to carve her own path.

Skytorn has been cancelled.
