Need for Speed: Payback and Vampyr are the two free PlayStation Plus games for the month of October 2020. Both games will become free for members on October 6.
Need for Speed: Payback was developed by Ghost Games and released in 2017 to mixed reviews. While it was a vast improvement over 2015's Need for Speed, it did have its own problems. The most notable complaint was the amount of microtransactions and loot-box like mechanics that limited customization. Payback is more of an action-driving game as opposed to a standard racer, offering "thrilling heist missions, metal-crunching car battles" and blockbuster setpieces.
The second game for October somewhat embraces the Halloween spirit for the month, and that is Dontnod Entertainment's third-person action RPG Vampyr. As a doctor turned vampire in the 1918's, it's up to you to decide how to use your supernatural abilities. Vampyr offers "deep narrative choices" that can shape the overall game. Choose to save the city's populace or feed on them to become stronger -- with consequences.
As a reminder, you have until October 5 to download Street Fighter V and PUBG: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Both NFS: Payback and Vampyr will be available until November 2.
October also marks the last month that the PlayStation 4 will be the newest in Sony's family. The PlayStation 5 is set to launch on November 12. It's unclear how PlayStation Plus will change with the PS5, but Sony is offering an initial batch of games through the PlayStation Plus Collection that will be free to play on PS5 for PS Plus members.
