Sony Interactive Entertainment is reportedly not going to be hosting their annual presentation at next year's E3; making it the first time the company has skipped this event in the show's 24-year history.
The news comes from an announcement by the Entertainment Software Association, in which companies like Nintendo and Microsoft were mentioned but Sony wasn't. Sony would later confirm this news in a statement the developer issued to Variety.
"
As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community. PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you".
In September
Sony also confirmed that this year they would not be hosting the annual PlayStation Experience Convention. The statement was released by Sony Entertainment Interactive chairman Shawn Layden, who mentioned that after
Marvel's Spider-Man released they didn't really have enough games to show attendees to the show; which is actually pretty fair considering that
Spider-Man was one of their heavy-hitters this year alongside Santa Monica's
God of War.
Sony will still be releasing a heavy-hitter next year, however, as Naughty Dog's highly anticipated The Last of Us: Part Two is expected to release in June of next year, albeir prior to the E3 presentation. Next year may be looking a bit slow for Sony but this year they delivered
God of War and
Marvel's Spider-Man, two games that are currently held in high regard and nominated for this year's
Game of the Year, so they have probably earned their right to skip next year's E3 altogether.
