People have said that The Last of Us would make for a great television series ever since it was released all the way back in 2013 and it turns out they were right. The first entry in the acclaimed video game duology was adapted into a series by HBO which debuted earlier this year to rave reviews. The first season more or less adhered to what happened in the game, however, will Season 2 adhere to what happened in The Last of Us Part II?
It's no secret that the narrative of The Last of Us Part II is quite controversial. While some are brazenly and emphatically displeased by certain story decisions, others see it as bold and exciting storytelling. It will certainly be a wonder to see how the HBO series goes about adapting the story of The Last of Us Part II. Series showrunner Craig Mazin recently divulged how much the second season of the show will adhere to the games and it sounds diplomatic to say the least.
"We will be doing some things exactly the way they were in the game," said Mazin (via Comicbook.com). "We're going to do other things that are in the game and we're gonna do some things that are in the game but we're gonna do them differently in our own method. No matter if you have played the game or not. You will be surprised as the season unfolds. We have some interesting twists and turns."
It seems they will be picking and choosing what makes it from the game into the series and, as such, players and non-players alike will be surprised by what the season has in store. We can't know in what aspects the season will be faithful to the game and when it will make its own path.
However, with The Last of Us Part II creative director and writer Neil Druckmann reprising those roles for the television adaptation, we can only assume that it will be loyal to the source material for the most part. After all, it's not like Druckmann himself would disagree with the story decisions that he himself chose. Perhaps it will simply be a case of making those choices more palatable and understandable for the masses. We'll just have to wait and see.
