Well, this is depressing. The era of the PlayStation 2 is officially at an end because Sony Japan has now announced that it will no longer provide support for the console. Honestly, I'm kind of surprised that they were still offering it in 2018 regardless, especially as it's been eighteen years since it was released!
Here's something that will make you feel old: when it came out in 2000, the PS2's main competitors were the SEGA Dreamcast, Nintendo GameCube, and Xbox. Since then, it's become the best-selling video game console of all-time with Sony announcing over 150 million units sold in 2011. Over 10,000 games were released for the PS2 and a total of 1.52 billion games were sold over the years.
Now, the console is officially dead as its aftercare service wraps up tomorrow and customer support ended on August 31st. As sad as it is to see it go, it had a good run and it's fair to say that it was pretty damn good of Sony to support it for as long as they did, especially with the PS3 and PS4 out in the world.
