The rumors were true! Final Fantasy Tactics is being remastered for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
Announced during Sony's State of Play ahead of Summer Game Fest, Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles is a remaster of the beloved strategy RPG, Final Fantasy Tactics. Arriving on PS5 and PS4 later this year, Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles will include two different versions of the game: an enhanced version with modern improvements and a classic version that stays true to the original experience in almost every aspect.
The enhanced version adds fully voiced dialogue, an optimized and updated UI, graphical improvements, and numerous quality of life features, including a "Squire" difficulty that makes the otherwise difficult game more accessible for first-time strategy players.
The classic version is just the way you remember the original 1997 game. It blends the original graphics and gameplay with the improved translation and localization featured in the War of the Lions release for PSP. There are also some additional quality of life features that improve the overall experience, such as an auto save feature.
Ivalice—a kingdom blessed by the light of the gods and ruled by the Two-headed Lion. A year after her defeat to Ordallia in the Fifty Years’ War, the king succumbed to malady, leaving a mere boy of two to ascend the throne.
Whoever was named regent would rule in truth, and thus emerged two rival candidates: dukes Goltanna and Larg, whose deeds during the war had earned them great renown. Goltanna the Black Lion and Larg the White Lion were destined to clash, and the resulting conflict would come to be known as the War of the Lions.
Against this backdrop appear Ramza, third son of House Beoulve, one of Ivalice’s leading military families, and his childhood companion Delita, a commoner raised amongst nobles. As they endeavor to chart a course through this tumultuous age, a mighty current draws them ever closer to the abyss.
Final Fantasy Tactics is considered by many to be one of the best tactical RPGs of all time. The game features a complex story, compelling characters, rewarding tactical gameplay, and deep customization with a flexible class system. Considered groundbreaking for its time, Final Fantasy Tactics would go on to influence many of today's popular TRPGs, such as Fire Emblem, Disgaea, and Triangle Strategy.
Final Fantasy Tactics will be released for PS5 and PS4 on September 30, 2025, with pre-orders available today.
