A new report suggests that Sony Interactive Entertainment has already shifted first party development onto the PlayStation 5. Considering that the PlayStation 4 has already been on the market for a bit over five years already, it makes sense that Sony would want to start focusing on what's next.
The information comes from industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, who made a comment on a
Resetera thread — under his ZhugeEX user account — stating that "
in general, most of the focus for Sony [first party studios] is on PS5 right now. It is still early to talk about next gen but I imagine we'll hear some whispers come out of GDC," while adding that PlayStation 5 dev kits "
are out there" and he has "
heard positive things about it," although he doesn't expect Sony to make any official announcements in the near future.
Other than Ahmad's comments, we don't really have any information on what kind of console this new PlayStation 5 will actually be. Last November we found out that
Sony had filed a patent for a new type of game cartridge, suggesting that they could be either working on a new handheld console à la PSP and PS Vita, or that their next homeconsole could be switching from Blu-ray discs to cartridges.
Given the success that Nintendo has had with the Switch, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to think that Sony could be willing to follo in Nintendo's footsteps and reveal a similar product that is both a handheld and home console. We'll just have to wait and see what Sony Interactive Entertainment comes up with when they decide to finally unveil their new piece of hardware.
