TOMB RAIDER 2 Officially A Go At MGM & Warner Bros; Alicia Vikander Set To Return As Lara Croft
It looks like last year's moderately successful reboot of the Tomb Raider movie series is getting a full-blown sequel with a new writer, – as Alicia Vikander is expected to return to the role of Lara Croft...
In a fascinating turn of events, Deadline has revealed that MGM and WB. are working on a sequel to last year's reboot of the Tomb Raider movie series. Considering that the first movie grossed $274 million worldwide ($58 million in the US) on a budget of $94 million, that’s an interesting development.
According to Deadline, Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) will reprise her role of Lara Croft, with Graham King’s GK Films (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Elizabeth Cantillon (The Girl in the Spider's Web) set to produce the upcoming picture. While Vikander is expected to return in the sequel, Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) and Alastair Siddons (Trespass Against Us) are not, as MGM and WB. have decided to hire a new writer to pen Tomb Raider 2's script - Amy Jump (A Field in England, Free Fire).
As revealed by the entertainment news magazine, Vikander was a big fan of Jump’s scripting. Although the producers’ willingness to broaden the pool of female action writers is definitely a good news, the fact that Robertson-Dworet won't be working on the sequel is quite odd, as her latest movie, the Marvel Studios-produced Captain Marvel, has managed to surpass $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide.
At the time of writing, MGM and WB. had not announced any plans to make a sequel to Tomb Raider.
Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared. From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Tomb Raider is the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero.
Tomb Raider was released in the United States on March 16, 2018.
