Since its creation, the MARVEL Contest of Champions game has been one of the smoothest and most engaging mobile fighting games out right now. From mainstay characters like Captain America to entirely original ideas like the Civil Warrior, the people behind the legendary game never stop creating
the best Marvel game that they can.

This year, the creators are organizing a competition that will show the world just how talented these players are. That event is the Summoner Showdown. Starting on August 17th, players from around the world can compete in battles and show off their skills at the game.

Summoner Showdown started off as an invite-only competition in 2019, which you can watch on the official Marvel Contest of Champions YouTube channel. Now, Kabam’s made the event bigger than ever. Summoner Showdown 2020 is a three-part competition starting with an in-game challenge to find the
top 9 players from around the world.

During events like this, those who work on the game get to see just how their hard work pays off and how players adapt and create their own fighting styles with the characters that are given. Even doing some amazing moves with characters that no one expected!

Recently, we were able to catch up with game producer Tyler Thomson and ask him some questions in regard to the event and development, along with his favorite character he’s played as or wants to add to the roster. Make sure to check it out below!

Nick: How long have you been working with Kabam?

Tyler Thomson
: I’ve been working with Kabam for almost four years.

Nick: What makes this year’s Summoner Showdown different from the previous one?

Tyler Thomson: First and foremost, we’re extremely excited that we’re able to open up Summoner Showdown to a bigger audience. Whether you’re a competitive Summoner looking to push your way into the Semi-Finals, or a casual Summoner looking to tackle some awesome content, everyone gets a chance to participate. Secondly, those that make it into the Semi Finals will experience a completely different format than last year’s event. I won’t give away too much yet, but for now, I can say that the structure of the match will be a special 1v1 format which includes choosing Defenders, Tactics, Attackers, and a Picks and Bans Phase.

Nick: Has quarantine created certain challenges in making the event?

Tyler Thomson:
Definitely. Collaborating on events such as this one is much easier when you can work face to face in person with your peers. With our entire studio working from home, that currently isn’t a possibility. On the flip side, we’ve adjusted to our new working conditions very quickly and have created an event we’re proud to share with all of you.

Nick: What are some of your favorite characters to play as?

Tyler Thomson:
Quake. She’s the best.

Nick: What has been the most rewarding part of putting together this year’s Summoner Showdown?

Tyler Thomson: Running through the event for the first time. After going from concepts, iterations, approvals, etc, it was awesome to see a glimpse of what the final product would look like.

Nick: What is it like working on and creating characters in the Marvel Universe?

Tyler Thomson:
Simply put, it’s awesome. As a fan of Marvel Comics, being able to bring content into the universe I’ve followed for so long has been a very gratifying experience.

Nick: Is there a character not yet in the game that you would like to see added in the future?

Tyler Thomson:
YES. Any of the Infinity Warp characters but if I had to choose, Ghost Panther. I mean c’mon, he’s riding a giant flaming panther! Maybe we would make him Incinerate immune ;)

Nick: Is there anything fans and players should know about the event before it releases?

Tyler Thomson:
If you’re planning on taking on either difficulty for the Summoner Showdown 2020 Qualifiers, be sure to rank up your 4-Star Champions and follow the action on our leaderboards! For a complete breakdown of the event head over to summonershowdown.com.
