After over twenty years of existing, the
Pokemon franchise has finally stepped into the realm of live-action film.
Detective Pikachu will be releasing on May 10th and star Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith as the titular Pokemon and, his human companion, Tim Goodman respectively.
This live-action film is a loose adaptation of the video-game of the same name and thus follows Detective Pikachu and Tim as they attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding the latter's missing father. With sequels and spinoffs rumoured to already be in the works, fans are wondering where the Pokemon cinematic universe is headed next. Thankfully,
Comicbook.com recently sat down with Ryan Reynolds and asked him just that.
The question was put to Reynolds during the film's recent press tour in Japan. Upon being asked where he thinks the live-action Pokemon universe could go after
Detective Pikachu, Reynolds said as such:
“It could go anywhere. Justice [Smith] ... has probably forgotten more about Pokemon than I’ll ever know. So, if we’re lucky enough to be making a bunch of these, I think you’ve got to take some deep dives. You’ve also got to zig when everyone thinks you’re going to zag. That starts with story and making it current and fun."
Reynolds went on further, explaining that he's surprised that the Pokemon franchise's rich world hasn't been taken advantage of sooner and that we should expect the cinematic universe to branch out in many different directions.
“I’m surprised this hasn’t been developed earlier because it is such a universe. You can see it going in all kinds of different directions.”
Detective Pikachu is set to release in theatres on May 10th, 2019.
