During Gamescom's Opening Night Live, Funcom reveals plans for a new open-world survival MMO, Dune: Awakening. The teaser for the game is short, but this looks absolutely incredible.
Making use of Dune's famous "fear is the mind-killer" quote, we don't get any gameplay footage, unfortunately, but all signs point to players being able to take control of massive spice-harvesting vehicles as they fight for survival on Arrakis (and yes, there are Sand Worms....and you can ride them!).
Aside from it being an MMO, very little has been revealed about Dune: Awakening, so it's probably still early days for this one. What we can tell you is that it will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. As for when we'll get our hands on it, your guess is as good as ours for now.
An official synopsis reveals that the action "is set on Arrakis and takes inspiration from both Frank Herbert’s novels and Denis Villeneuve’s Academy Award-winning film while exploring exciting new possibilities in the franchise."
There have been rumblings for a while that a Dune game was in the works, with a job listing for Funcom also shedding a little light on the direction the project is being taken in. "We invite you to come shape a world made boundless by its deep lore and enduring themes," it read. "Join us as we build a Dune for all fans to realize the dream of traversing its ever-shifting landscape, sand under fingernails and spice in the air."
The possibility to rise from survival to dominance in Dune: Awakening, an open-world survival MMO set on a vast and seamless Arrakis shared by thousands of players, is unbelievably exciting and we can't wait to see more from this one. It definitely sounds like Funcom has ambitious plans for the beloved property, anyway.
