Pokémon: Detective Pikachu released one week ago. From its opening, the film raked in $54 million at the domestic box office and $175 million worldwide. Impressive numbers, though they most likely would've been larger if not for
Avengers: Endgame releasing nearby.
The live-action
Pokémon film was a success for the most part and therefore, it comes as no surprise that, Legendary Entertainment are reportedly developing a direct sequel to the Ryan Reynolds-starrer.
It has been teased by those behind that film that the live-action
Pokémon cinematic universe would only continue to grow. There were rumours of a direct sequel to
Detective Pikachu being planned as well as a spinoff which would follow, fan-favourite
Pokémon, Mewtwo.
Comicbook.com supposedly has confirmation of the former. Their report stating that multiple sources involved with production of the first instalment all corroborate the same information:
Detective Pikachu 2 is on its way. Exactly how this direct sequel will work narratively, given the events of the first film, is anyone's guess.
Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery.
Detective Pikachu is set to arrive in theatres on May 10th, 2019.
