The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and You star Tati Gabrielle is in final talks to join the cast of New Line's upcoming Mortal Kombat sequel.
The first movie was released during the height of the pandemic but still managed to find a modicum of success at the box office. Crucially, it quickly became one of HBO Max's biggest hits, proving there's a lot of interest among moviegoers to see these iconic video game characters battle it out in live-action.
As for Gabrielle, she will play Jade.
The character was first introduced in 1993's Mortal Kombat II and has since become a firm fan-favourite. The lifelong friend of Princess Kitana, she serves as both one of Shao Kahn's assassins and spies, and as the personal bodyguard of Kitana.
Gabrielle is the second major casting addition to the sequel after we recently learned that The Boys and Thor: Ragnarok star Karl Urban will play Johnny Cage. He's obviously the cocky movie star who enters the tournament to prove he can do his own stunts, and the character's presence was first teased in the closing moments of 2021's Mortal Kombat.
Despite these new additions, the trade notes that some familiar faces - such as Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson - are expected to reprise their respective roles.
Moon Knight Head Writer Jeremy Slater has penned the screenplay, while Simon McQuoid returns to direct.
According to a logline shared in this report, "The sequel continues the story of a group of ragtag fighters, versed in the ways of martial arts, who defend our reality which is known in Earthrealm against the Outworld."
Gabrielle is no stranger to video game movies after starring in Uncharted. She also recently led her voice to one of Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham's lead characters.
Mortal Kombat 2 doesn't currently have a confirmed release date.
