According To Todd Howard, STARFIELD Will Kick Off The Next Generation Of Single-Player RPGs

As shocking as it is, Starfield is the first new series in twenty-five years from Bethesda Game Studios, developers of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchise. The title was officially announced during E3 2018 with a short, pretty enigmatic teaser focused on a sunrise over a peaceful, alien planet. 

Last week, Bethesda Executive Producer Todd Howard revealed that Bethesda’s creative team thought about Starfield for at least 10 years and the developers started working on it full time after the official release of Fallout 4 three years ago. Starfield doesn't have a confirmed release date yet, with some reports claiming that the upcoming games won't be released for the current generation of consoles.

Speaking with Eurogamer at Spanish conference Gamelab 2018, Howard had a chance to make the situation simple, but sadly, it's still unclear whether or not owners of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will have a chance to check it out on their current consoles. Howard reassured that Starfield is a next-gen title and explained what it means for Bethesda. "That to us means two things," Todd Howard said "It does mean hardware and it does mean software on our side, and it also means gameplay - what does the next generation of epic single-player RPGs feel like to us?"

"What systems we put it out on - what's the hardware requirements - is still to be determined. We're pushing it; we're thinking very, very far in future so we're building something that will handle next-generation hardware. That's what we're building on right now, that's where our mind is, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't exist on the current systems as well," the Executive Producer clarified. 

So, when can we expect to play Starfield? According to Howard, Starfield is in production and the Bethesda team is able to play the game right now, but it seems that the space adventure will be a gross-gen title. Considering that some reports claim that an Xbox One successor and PlayStation 5 are expected to launch sometime next year, there's a chance we will visit this new universe before 2020.
